This next recipe used to be the Café “Teaching Stew”, both because it was considered easy to make and was one of the few legible recipes we possessed at the time. All new workers made it as their first attempt and were only allowed to progress when they had mastered Mediterranean Stew. This proved to be a mixed blessing as, although it is a simple recipe and when made properly both looks and tastes wonderful, some of the heroic failures turned out by learners ruined its reputation and it fell out of favour and off the menu. Recently it has been rehabilitated and is just as satisfying as ever it was in its heyday.

Now, from the land of the rising sun, no we do not mean Yorkshire, we bring you a stew redolent with all the exotic flavours of the orient. Sorry about the purple prose but we really like this stew! There is an ancient Japanese story about Kimpira, something to do with the strength of the sauce giving humans the strength to fight bears, we would recite it here but we have forgotten it – just as well really as the following stew bears no relation to the traditional Japanese sauce, the cook who invented it just pinched the name. Well, it’s better than pinching the recipe.

This is another recipe that has been re-invented by every new cook that has ever worked in our Café, and is none the worse for that. The current style has been modified for home consumption and makes for a good solid winter warmer. The only Hungarian who worked at Eighth Day was nonplussed by the suggestion that her countrywomen spent their time stuffing huge platefuls of this down themselves, mind you she denied the existence of goulash as a national dish. Never ones to let the truth stand in the way of a good story however, this dish is a regular on our menu.

And now, by popular demand and at enormous expense, that age-old favourite – the Eighth Day Chilli. This is another recipe that has been reinvented more times than anyone can remember. The original was full of brown lentils and called ‘Chilli con Beano’ This present version misses out the lentils and some of the more anti-social side effects!

This recipe has been made by us in one form or another for the last ten years. Its popularity is partly because it is tasty and interesting to cook but also because the blend of peanut and coconut with the spice of the chilli pepper lifts it completely out of the everyday. To obtain the full benefit, turn up the gas fire, put on the Bermuda shorts, sip a glass of rum and get a loved one to hit you on the back of the head with a coconut. What bliss.
