What’s In Our Shop

Everything on our shelves has been tried, tested and reviewed by us. Since 1970, we’ve been huge fans of plant based, lovers of local and the eco things in life, and ethical advocates through and through.

With our own plant based kitchen attached to our downstairs café, we’re also super proud to offer our own vegan meal creations, exclusively in our Manchester shop.

Groceries, Essentials & Everyday

Everything you need for a meat-free life under one roof!
From grains & pulses, baking essentials & cooking oil, spices & herbs to teas, coffee & cocoa, if it’s veggie or vegan, then we probably have it.  We’ve got you covered for mealtime essentials like organic chopped tomatoes, beans, chickpeas, tinned meals, soups, sauces, pastes, noodles and pasta as well as old favourites like sosmix, burgermix, nut roast & tvp mince.

We’ve got loads of dairy free “milks” with soy, almond, hemp, rice, oat, pea and even potato milk to pair up with your brew or cereal, along with dairy free desserts and creams. There’s a huge variety of treats too including biscuits, nuts, dried fruits, crisps, crackers and chocolate.

Fresh Bread and Seasonal Organic Fruit & Veg

Delivered fresh every weekday morning, the best sourdoughs, wholemeal and seeded loaves from local bakers Trove Bakery can be found in our bread baskets. They come unpackaged and plastic free, bring your own bag or we’ll wrap it in paper for you.

Our veg fridge is filled every week with fresh, mostly loose (without packaging apart from what nature provided) seasonal fruit & veg from the UK and Europe and sometimes a little further beyond. What’s available changes regularly, but we do try to keep our selection interesting. As well as stocking what we would class as the seasonal basics for any kitchen, do keep your eyes peeled for short season specialities such as fragrant Italian bergamots or UK grown strawberries, as they are soon gone. Our fruit & veg is an edible rainbow at its finest and it’s all organic, making it kinder to the environment.

We have used our local Manchester fruit & veg suppliers Organic North since 2003, they’re a fellow members run co-operative and the largest and longest-established wholesalers of certified organic produce in the north. We love that we know exactly where our fruit and veg comes from and that we are able to pass that information on to you allowing you to make an informed choice about food miles when buying fresh produce.

Chilled Produce

With a great choice of sausages, bacon, sandwich slices, steaks and roasts, our selection is perfect for both flexitarian and veggie/vegan mealtimes. Good for the gut, naturally fermented foods such as Kefir, Kombucha, Kimchi and Sauerkraut are also popular items in our chillers, check out local made fermented goodies from Loving Foods which are delicious and a great addition to a healthy diet.

Our takeaway deli counter is also stuffed with locally made goodies with sweet and savoury delights from The Silver Apples, The Vakery, The Vegan Picnic Basket, Saker Foods and Forest Foods. We also stock our very own range of freshly made plant based sandwiches and tasty pasties like our vegan Spanakopita and Cajun Spiced Cheese & Potato along with a mouth watering selection of home baked sweet treats.  At the counter we also serve Under Milk Wood filter coffee from Marsden coffee roasters Dark Woods as well as a selection of black and herb teas.

Craft Beer, Organic Wine & Alcohol

If there’s craft beer made in Manchester or the North West that is veggie or vegan friendly, you’ll probably find it at Eighth Day. We’re lovers of Alphabet Brewing Co, Squawk, Marble Brewery and Small Beer and our shelves are a snapshot of the creative inspiration of some of the small breweries in our city, including some great gluten free beers! Keep your eyes peeled for the small runs of seasonal specials, brewery collaborations and experimental ales that make their way onto our shelves and try them while you can as they really don’t last for long.

We’ve got summery canned gin cocktails from 6 O’Clock Gin, hard seltzers from Manchester based Sunshiiine, award winning ciders from Perry’s Somerset Cider and some great low and alcohol free tipples too.

In our wine section you’ll find a great selection of organic wines, mostly vegan friendly and some that are low or sulphate free too, including rich, juicy reds, refreshing whites, rose’s and celebratory fizz as well as seasonal specials too.

Refill Stations

We have two refill stations in the shop.

By the entrance of the shop, you’ll find refill station number one, with dry goods like organic rice, lentils, oats, muesli and pasta. It’s a great way to reduce both plastic waste and food waste as you can but exactly what you you need. Simply bring your clean containers and get filling, don’t worry if you do forget your jars and bags, we have paper bags to help out.

Our second refill station is for cruelty free and environmentally friendly household cleaning liquids and body care, again this saves a lot of plastic and also a nice bit of cash too. We currently stock laundry liquid, fabric conditioner, washing-up liquid, toilet cleaner and multi surface spray from Suma Ecoleaf which is made by a fellow workers’ co-op based in Yorkshire. Above the cleaning products is our cruelty free body care refill section which currently provides refills of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hand wash and body lotion from Suma Alternative, Bio-D, Manchester legends Faith In Nature and the cult favourite Dr Bronner’s Magic Soap.

Pick one up as you shop, or bring in your glass jars, containers or reuse your old bottles.

Household & Cleaning

We’re big fans of vegan friendly, natural and environmentally friendly cleaning sprays, liquids and refills, solid washing-up bars, plastic free dishwasher tabs, sensitive skin friendly laundry products, and of course the very glamorous eco friendly bin liners.

We  stock a great range of household cleaning products from Bio-D, Suma Ecoleaf, Ecozone as well as refillable bottles, baking sundries from If You Care, wax wraps and compostable cling film. The shelves are also chock-a-block with reusable bottles, cotton cloths, compostable loofah pads, compostable sponges and recycled scourers as well as bamboo and FSC wood brushes to keep your house and conscience sparkling!

Looking to reduce your plastic waste? As well as our cleaning and household refill section where you can reuse your existing plastic bottles rather than buying new, we stock a large range of cleaning concentrates and pods from Mack, Ocean Saver and Neat. These nifty little plastic free pods and concentrates weigh almost nothing and are designed to be used with bottles you already own and the water from your own taps, saving plastic and your arms from dragging heavy bottles of detergent home. We stock everything from washing-up liquid, drain maintainer, loo cleaner, antibac sanitiser, glass cleaner, kitchen degreaser, floor cleaner and bathroom cleaner and they do a fabulous job!

We’ve also got scented products to set the mood or banish those nasty niffs with vegan essential oil wax candles made by Heaven Scent, Mulieres and Amour naturals,  along with gorgeous essential oil room sprays from Absolute Aromas and Tisserand. There’s also Fairly Traded incense, room sprays & reed diffusers from Organic Good and a huge selection of Indian incense from Satya, Golden Nag and Tales of India as well as smudge sticks, plant resins & rope incense.
