Independents’ Day shows that independent stores can thrive

The Eighth Day – Manchester’s independent vegetarian cafe and healthfood shop – is throwing open its doors on July 4 to celebrate Independents’ Day and Co-operatives Fortnight.

Our Oxford Road based co-operative business is celebrating over four decades of independent retailing in the city and has recently been awarded ‘Best Independent Retailer’ in the Natural & Organic Awards 2013.

At a time when many retailers are facing increasing challenges on the high street, Ursula Gothard of the Eighth Day says innovation and focus on changing consumer needs has been key to their success.

“The Eighth Day has always been a strong ethical business and this is very important to many of our customers, but over the years we have always kept pace with changing customer demands and adapted our business to suit. “We have seen large supermarket chains increasingly encroaching on our territory by stocking more vegetarian and organic products, but being 100% vegetarian still pays dividends for us, as our customers know that we have sourced the best vegetarian products available.”

For example, the Eighth Day has stayed ahead of the competition by sourcing special vegetarian products such as nutritional supplements, vegan wines, raw foods and cruelty-free body care products. Many of the products stocked are only available in Manchester at the Eighth Day.

Says Ursula: “Over 80% of the products we stock are supplied by independent businesses and this ethos is important to us and our customers.”

Sales of organic and quality foods have held steady during the recession and the Eighth Day has even grown staff numbers over the past few years, in spite of the economic situation.

On Thursday 4 July, we are holding an open day and will be showcasing a wide range of locally and independently sourced vegetarian products. As well as tastings there will be nutritional advice available and a special menu in the café.

Natural and Organic Products Europe Show 2016

natural products show

This weekend Ursula, Sam and Jen (the main buyers for 8th Day) went to the annual NOP show at Excell in London. This two day trade only show is the ultimate new health products showcase and networking event for healthfood stores and natural health industry brands.

The team arrived just before Sunday lunchtime after an early train journey from Manchester and immediately split up as each of the buyers manages a different department and it’s the only way you can cover such a large show. The show itself is split into different areas such as Beauty, Supplements, Organic Products, in addition there are country areas with lots of food stalls offering foodie delights from their respective countries as well as seminar areas for education and industry talks.

All of us buyers were looking for the latest new products that we think our customers will love as well as networking with brands and buyers from other stores. It’s a packed Sunday with meetings until the show finishes at 5pm and we then reconvened to compare notes and take a breather.

Monday morning, we’re back at the show at 9am to mop up all the areas we didn’t get chance to see the day before and second and even third opinions are sought on new products, then it’s a dash to Euston to catch the train home just after 2pm. The train home is then dominated by discussions about everything we’ve seen and the people we’ve met. For us, as buyers it’s a fantastic opportunity to meet up with the brands we sell and meet new people in our industry, as well as get exciting new products that we hope our customers will love.

Sustainable Fashion Alert, the Swapshops are back!

This September we are relaunching the swapshops back in the Cafe, so it’s a big call-out to all local fashionistas and book lovers to get swapping rather than buying and fuelling the cheap throw-away culture that has swamped the UK over the last ten years.

That unloved dress, coat or accessory gathering dust at the back of your wardrobe could be just the thing someone else has been dreaming of to complete their outfit! Swapping books is great as well, you never know, you might fall in love with an author or book you’ve never heard of and it saves paper, so you’ve nothing to lose. So get clearing out your wardrobe and that box we know you have got either under the bed or stashed on top of your wardrobe and get swapping and saving some dosh. All leftover items will be donated to local charities, so nothing will go to waste.

The next swapshop is from 5pm until 7pm on Thursday the 6th of October in the Cafe, we hope to see you there.
